File SHA-256 Checksum

Calculate a local file SHA-256 checksum. Files stay in this browser tab.

Compare a local file with a trusted SHA-256 digest

How to use this tool

Choose a local file of 32 MB or less. Web Crypto computes its SHA-256 fingerprint and displays a 64-character hexadecimal string. Compare it to the digest published by the file provider through a trusted channel, including every character. The three-byte file abc has a known SHA-256 of ba7816bf8f01cfea414140de5dae2223b00361a396177a9cb410ff61f20015ad.

Check the result

Adding a newline changes the digest. Matching a hash supplied by an untrusted stranger does not establish publisher identity or software safety. Larger files are rejected to limit browser memory use; the selected bytes stay in the browser and are not uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my result?

Run the tool, then use its download control. Text results can be saved as a file; image and audio tools show their available export links after generation. A disabled download means a new result is needed.

Are my inputs uploaded?

The tool processes your input in this browser tab. Opening the page downloads the site assets; your tool inputs are not sent to a processing server. Save your result before closing the tab.

How do I start again?

Use Restore example to reset the editable fields, then run the tool again. Changing input invalidates the previous export so that you can generate a fresh result.
